Why is my Car not Starting? Welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith, master certified technician. That I can be a pretty complex question so let’s start with this. There’s two different kinds of not starting. One is it cranks, but no start which sounds like it’s out of gas. The other one is the engine doesn’t crank over. So the first one we’re not gonna address right now, we’re gonna talk about the second one. If your car does not crank over, there's a couple things you need to pay attention to. You could have a scenario where you go to start it and it sounds like a toy machine gun. That is generally going to be a weak battery. So either your battery is old or needs charged. Secondly, we can have a scenario where you turn it on, all the lights come on, you go to start it, you hear a "thunk" and all your lights go out. One of the things you can do with that is turn your headlights on. That one most often is a connection at your battery that is weak. So tighten up those connections at your battery and that might go away. The third one is you either get a single click click click or you get nothing. Generally speaking that one’s going to be a starter. The diagnostics are a little bit more in depth, but I hope they give you an idea of why your car may not be starting.
