Why do some cars have two fans?

Why do some vehicles have two fans out for the radiator and why do some only have one? Welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I’m Rick Smith, Master certified technician. First of all let’s consider the shape of a fan. Fans are always round, right? You can’t take a square and spin it. It's always going to be a circle. So some of that depends on the design of the car. If it’s wide and short then we have to have two fans. If it’s big and square like a lot of trucks, we can use one fan. We always on fans use some sort of a duct work which we call a shroud. This is because even though the fan itself blows, we still have to do some ductwork to make sure that all of the air that that blade pulls goes over the radiator or the condenser or the intercooler or whatever it is they’re trying to blow air over.
