Automotive Technician Crisis

We are in an Automotive Technician Crisis in the United States right now. So I thought maybe I’d share a little bit about my personal journey. Welcome to Mercie J Auto care where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I’m Rick Smith, master certified technician. Back in 1990 I had been in the business about five or six years and I’d actually developed a pretty strong reputation. I was known for my diagnostic abilities. I was known for the quality of my work. I was also productive so I made money for the shops that I worked for. At the time my income was about $60,000 a year. Now in Arizona the average income was about $45,000 so I was actually making really good money but I was unhappy. The way I put it to most people is you know those lunch trucks that come into the shop in the middle of the day? Well, that’s where my money was being spent because I seemed like I was living at the shop. On Saturdays there were friends who were having birthday parties and going to the lake or whatever and I was having to work a number of those Saturdays and I just didn’t have the quality of life I wanted even though I was making the kind of money I would like. So what happened was I ended up going to another shop back then that actually dropped my income down to about $45,000 and I didn’t have to work Saturdays and I was extremely happy. A few years later when that shop decided they were going to start opening Saturdays, that’s when I opened my business. That was 1995 and I’ve never worked a Saturday since, I’ve never looked back, money or no money. We do pay well and we do have great benefits. Some of the dollar dangling out there’s a little higher than what we do offer but I think it’s a much more enjoyable place to work. So look if you’re like I was back in 1990 you may get a ton of money but you’re not happy and you just really want to do a great job in a place where there’s not politics, where everybody’s treated with respect and we’re honest with the client then give us a call.
