Why is my Car's Fan So Loud?

One of the questions that’s trending right now is “Why is my fan so loud?” and it could be “Is my radiator fan loud?” or “Why is the fan from my engine loud?” So I am going to try to answer that for you today.

One of the questions that’s trending right now is “Why is my fan so loud?” and it could be “Is my radiator fan loud?” or “Why is the fan from my engine loud?” So I am going to try to answer that for you today. Welcome to Mercie J auto care, where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I’m Rick Smith, master certified technician. I have two helpers today, gumball and maximum. We’re only going to talk about one type of fan today. Your car could have an electric fan or a fan clutch. Most of our modern stuff, even my Chevy Sierra, have electric fans, but if you have an older pick up or even an older rear wheel drive car, sometimes you will have a fan clutch. Which is this and the way this works is you can see that if the engine spinning, the fan is attached here they can be independent of each other. As a temperature comes across here and heats up this thermal unit, then the two kind of become locked and then the fan starts to spend quite fast. It can sound almost like an airplane. The most common problem I see with these is actually that they don’t speed fast enough. Like if you’re pulling a trailer on a hill or something like that, then you could have some overheating issues. What happens is unfortunately the aftermarket seems to have a tough time to build these properly so a lot of times if you don’t get an original equipment fan clutch, they will lock up too often and be quite noisy or maybe your engines running hot and they’re locking up because of that. So rear wheel drive vehicle with a mechanical fan, that’s why it’s probably making noises because your fan clutch is locking up. I hope this been informational for you and until next time safe travels to you and blessings.
