The heart of the air conditioning is a pump which is called the compressor. It takes horsepower to turn the compressor, so yes it does affect fuel economy. If you have and electric car or a hybrid like a Toyota Prius, then how high you run the blower fan can change you gas use. My clients who drive a Prius tell me they can see a difference when they run the fan on speed one or two because the engine runs less often. Today it’s 118 degrees in Mesa Arizona, so the added fuel expense is well worth the comfort.
