Why does my Car Air Conditioning Turn Off by itself?
“Why does my Air Conditioning Turn Off By Itself?” Welcome to Mercie J Auto Care, Where Compassion and Craftsmanship Come Together. I'm Rick Smith, ASE Certified Master Technician. I you lose your air conditioning during acceleration or climbing a hill, you may have a vacuum leak.
The ventilation system on your car has a number of doors that deflect where the air goes. On some vehicles the doors are operated by engine vacuum. If vacuum is lost, the doors typically default to the defrost position, so it may feel like you lost air conditioning, but actually it started cooling the windshield instead of your face. Engines produce high vacuum at idle and deceleration and maintain good vacuum while cruising. During acceleration or high loads like climbing a hill lowers the vacuum and can cause the ventilation issue.
