How does my Dual Zone AC work?
“How does my Dual Zone AC Work?” Welcome to Mercie J Auto Care, Where Compassion and Craftsmanship Come Together. I'm Rick Smith, ASE Certified Master Technician. The part in your car that gets cold is called an Evaporator.
Refrigerant gets pumped by the AC Compressor into the inside of the car while under low pressure and also a low temperature. Usually 35 to 40 degrees in the Evaporator and we blow air over that and it takes heat from the car and puts it into the Refrigerant so that your air becomes colder. So we have a Blower Motor that blows air through the Evaporator. Then we have a heater core which gives us heat. On a single zone system, we have a door that we call a Blend Door or Air Mix Door that is operated by a Blend Door Actuator. That door deflects the air between hot and cold so we can have full hot or full cold. The dual zone system works the same way except it has individual doors for the driver and the passenger
