The question we are going to answer today is, “Why does my car leak water”
First of all, we are talking about clear H2O, not radiator fluid or windshield washer fluid. There are two
places where your car will naturally produce water. One would leave a puddle about even with the
bottom of the windshield either on the right side or near the center of the vehicle. The other is from the
exhaust pipe.
The one by the windshield is a summertime occurrence. It will be more pronounced during humid days
and may leave a fairly significant amount of water on the ground after you park. It is condensation from
your air conditioning. The part that makes you feel the cold air on your face is called an evaporator. It
gets very cold, and just like a glass of ice water sweats when it is hot and humid, so does your
evaporator. Since it is inside the car and in a box, we have a drain tube at the bottom to keep the water
from dripping on your carpet. If you hear water sloshing around or your carpet gets wet, the drain tube
may be plugged with debris, or sometimes bugs like to nest in it.
Water from the exhaust will happen more so in cooler weather, primarily when the engine is first
started and has not yet fully warmed up. One of the by-products of a healthy catalytic converter is the
production of H2O. It may drip from the tailpipe, or you may see it dripping from the muffler because
there is a tiny drain hole in the muffler to let the water out and avoid corrosion. As things start to warm
up there may be steam coming from the exhaust rather than water dripping.
If seeing water has worried you, now you can smile because it means your car is working well.
Until next time, safe travels and blessings to you.
