Why does my car battery keep dying?
First things first, we need to make sure the battery is healthy. It is not uncommon for tests to be false.
Assuming the battery is good, we need to make sure the alternator is charging it properly. Testing
charging system voltage is only part of the equation. Make sure your mechanic has the proper
equipment to test the diodes.
If the battery and alternator are good, then we most likely have a parasitic draw. In other words,
something is draining the battery when the car is turned off. An ammeter is required to test for draw.
We want less than a tenth of an amp. If more than that, we could have something left on like a map
light or we might have a component failure like a computer that won’t go to sleep. The test has to be
verified 20 or 30 minutes after shut down because it can take a while for all the electronics to fully
power down.
This is the kind of diagnostic challenge that I love to tackle, so if you are struggling with finding the
solution, give us a call and we’ll have you back on the road in no time.
Until next time, safe travels and blessings to you.
