What is a Timing Chain?
What is a timing chain? Welcome to Mercie J where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith.
So in order for your car to motivate down the road, we need to spin a crankshaft, and the crankshaft is a little bit like the crank that's on your bicycle. So imagine that crank spinning and it drives the wheel on the bicycle.
So what's connected to that crankshaft is a connecting rod, and the best way to describe the connecting rod would be that it's kind of like the bone between your foot and your knee.
Now your knee or that muscle up on top of your knee is like the piston. And so when the engine fires, the pistons force down, spins the crankshaft and makes you go down the road.
Now in order for that combustion process to happen, we have to suck in air and we have to have fuel and then we have to compress it and then ignite it and then we have to exhaust it. So all of that has to happen in the right time.
And so the way the valves are open is by camshafts, the cam shaft spins. So basically what a timing chain does is it connects the crankshaft, that part like your legs and all that spinning your bike, to the camshaft, which is what opens and closes the valves.
So the crankshaft will usually have a fairly small gear. And the camshaft will have a larger gear and vary quite a bit. And then in between those we have one or more chains. And you can see, this one looks very similar to a bicycle chain. And they have to be timed properly, that's why it's called a timing chain.
