Why Is It Hard to Fill My Car Up With Gas?
I was recently asked, “Why is it difficult sometimes for me to fuel up my car, it keeps clicking off?” Welcome to Mercie J Auto Care where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith.
Well, here's how I want you to look at it. If you have a water cooler, and you're getting water into a cup, you'll notice that it will bubble up and then it'll stop and it'll bubble up, and it'll stop. And the reason for that is that you have a certain amount of volume in that water tank, and when you're pulling water out, it has to be displaced with some air, some air has to go in.
Well the same thing happens when you're filling your tank. When you have fuel going in, air has to come out, it has to be displaced. So what we have is, let's imagine this is where I'm filling my tank. Well then I will have another hose attached to the top of the tank, and it will be up here to vent air out.
So when I stick my nozzle in, I'm filling and air's coming out through this little hose right here. Now, if I happen to have my nozzle too far up and I put fuel into this hose now, I've blocked off that vent. And so sometimes some cars are more sensitive than others. It depends on how~which direction I have the nozzle facing, but also making sure that I have that nozzle far enough down so that I'm not getting fuel into this.
If you still have problems, you could have a problem with the vent system. Something with the hose or some of the emission controls can affect it as well. So I hope that helps you understand a little bit of what happens when you have a little bit of difficulty putting fuel in your car.
