How do you clean corroded battery contacts in a car? Welcome to Mercie J where compassion and craftsmanship come together. I'm Rick Smith.

So let's take a look at the battery on this car, and my screen is good enough here, this cable right here, everything's pretty clean. But if you look at this, we call it kind of a science project, you got like some white crusty buildup on it and that's our corrosion that we want to get cleaned up.

Now the first thing we wanna be careful about when we clean corrosion off of the battery, is if we wash that corrosion off it can get on to other wires or connectors or even components that are underneath the battery.

So what I recommend that you do, is you use tons of water. We use a pressure washer here, but you can use a garden hose with a sprayer. Get it hosed off really well, and then make sure you wash everything off underneath and everything so it's all good and clean and washed away.

Once you’ve cleaned the exterior part of this, then we want to make sure that the contacts between the battery and the cable are nice and clean and tight. So first of all we're going to take the cables off.

A couple things is you need to be aware of how to do that without shorting things out. So normally take the negative one off first, and then the positive one secondly, keep in mind you're going to lose some memories on the car. Maybe the clock will reset. Maybe some radio stations might reset.

I like to use plumbing brushes. So on the cable, I cleaned the inside of that cable with a plumbing brush and on the posts on the battery, I like to clean it with this. And you sort of wire brush will work. Get those nice and brushed and cleaned, put it all back together, and you’re all cleaned up and set to go.
