How to check if a brake booster is working?

Welcome to Mercie J, where compassion and craftsmanship come together, I'm Rick Smith. So there's a couple of different kinds of brake boosters. We have ones that are vacuum controlled and so engine vacuum helps those work. Then there's ones that are hydraulically controlled and then we also have some electronics that can be involved.

What a brake booster does is help you with the amount of effort you have to push on the pedal. So it makes it easier to stop your car. If the brake booster fails, you can have a number of different things that can happen. Your pedal might kick back on you, your pedal might feel really hard.

One of the one of the quick, easy ways to test, but it's not 100% test, is turn your ignition key on, turn your car off. So your engine is not running, the keys on, pump your brake pedal down, it should get really hard. Now hold your foot on it, start the car and it should sink.
