How do I Check my Transmission Fluid?

I wish the answer to that was simple, but it varies from car to car. This is an older Toyota here and it has a dipstick. So on this particular car you would have the engine running, it’s supposed to be warmed up but if it’s cool, that is fine. With the engine running, in Park, you wipe the dipstick off put it back in then pull it out. There’s even some marks on the dipstick that tells you when to read it cold and when to read it when the engine is hot. Some cars, you will have to read the instructions. They might have a dipstick, but it tells you that you have to check it with the car off. Many newer cars now have no simple way of checking it because you need a special tool to check it or there’s some plugs underneath the car that you pull. Manual transmissions don’t have dip sticks, they have plugs underneath so unless you have jack stand or lift, they’re a little bit tougher to check.
